The river flows from west to east in front of our south-facing beach. It seems gentle, but is deceiving – it has a strong current that will sweep you along for many miles if you’re not paying attention.
Twice this month, different campers have had to bail far downstream, leaving their kayak/floatie, walking through the bush for a few kilometers to the nearest house for safety.
Luckily, they were driven back here by the landowners and all is well.
If you are a strong paddler, you will be fine if you pay attention to the time, as it will take much longer to paddle back here against the current.
We suggest paddling westward, then you can drift/paddle back with the current if you get tired.
We’d like to remind everyone to bring the kayaks/canoes/floaties high up on to the beach, not touching the water – We have lost kayaks (and too many floaties!) that were not put away properly, gusts of wind carried them into the river and then were gone.
Also, if you are not a strong swimmer, don’t try to swim across the river, as some people have had to be rescued when they realized they were being carried away with the current – You can swim diagonally towards the land while following the current, where you will eventually get to the shore further east of the main beach, and walk back.
Look out for each other, respect the river and be safe!
