This year, we have crossed a threshold that has made our little piece of paradise more crowded than expected. Because of this, we need to update some of our policies and pricing to accommodate the work involved and the cost of maintaining Fishers’ Paradise. We cannot constantly grow to accept more people, it’s not good for the environment and it’s not what we want to do – Part of being steward of these 200 acres is to limit the ecological impact.
Our aim is to simply provide a wilderness space for people to enjoy camping in a sustainable way – We would like to keep this place as pristine as possible with minimal waste and congestion. This means that all garbage must be taken away from campsites and not left to wild animals and the elements – there is a dump trailer by the entrance to leave garbage/recycling. It also means reducing the number of people on the land.
We have not raised our prices in 4 years. It’s time. We are getting older and not into piling on more labour for ourselves and stressing the environment. Hence, there will be fewer people here moving forward, which is kind of the goal – it seems counterintuitive, but we are about quality, not quantity. The pricing is taking into account a higher cost of wood/porta-potties, providing/fixing amenities, and preserving the property. It has taken 15 years to create this space and we’d love to continue offering a beautiful and safe place to camp while also enjoying the property in a peaceful way. We will still provide campfire/sauna wood, potable water, and free use of canoes/kayaks. Fishers’Paradise is and always has been our family home, first and foremost.
At this point, we will start charging a small fee per child and per dog – We are overrun LOL (kids 5 and under are still free though). Kids are kids, they break and lose things. Dogs are dogs, they leave a bit of mess behind. It is just a sensible thing to do.
Since Covid, we have appreciated reservations to know exactly who and how many are on the property at any given time – we are keeping that policy. In the past, campers could just show up and we’d happily accommodate, but it is no longer viable. Call ahead to reserve a spot. We will continue limiting the number of people on the property outside of events having their own attendee limits. We cannot accommodate day trips, the beach and facilities are for those who have a reserved site, otherwise, the amenities are overstretched.
In the future, we will focus more on outdoor events, including birthday parties, reunions, retreats, stag/does, weddings, small festivals…
We have lived here since 2006, slowly creating this space with nature which is not only wonderful to be in but is respected and appreciated by all who visit. We acknowledge the love and support given since opening up to guests in 2012, thank you!
In Gratitude,
the Fishers
